Linear motor oil pump could cut energy use

The China facility of US-based motor specialist Harbin Electric has developed a 'green' vertical oilwell pump thatcould cut energy requirements by 20-30% and reduce maintenance costs when compared to traditional oilwell pumps.

The Tower Type Oil Pump is reportedly the world's first oilwell pump to incorporate a large-thrust, cylindrical synchronous linear motor. It incorporates a patented technology that measures the tension required to lift liquid out of a wellhead, and immediately adapts pumping in order to reduce energy required. The technology also has automatic and reversing speeds.

A prototype of the pump has been running in a oilfield owned by Daqing Petroleum for eighteen months.

"This product development is an important milestone for our company as it further positions Harbin Electric as a leader in industrial motor technology," says Tianfu Yang, chairman and CEO of Harbin.
