US$85 million contract for New Orleans pumping
Weston Solutions, Inc has been awarded an estimated US$85 million design-build contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hurricane Protection Office (HPO) to increase the existing temporary pumping capacity at two canals in New Orleans, Louisiana. The pumps will move water from the outfall canals into Lake Pontchartrain in the event of a major storm surge that requires closure of the canal flood gates.
"This is a critically important project for the people of New Orleans," said Patrick G. McCann, Weston's chairman, CEO and president. "I am confident that this local team has the proven technical capability, client experience and local resources to deliver the necessary increase in New Orleans pumping capacity."
As the general contractor for the design-build project, Weston has partnered with two Louisiana-based construction contractors, M.R. Pittman Group, LLC and Dynamic Industries, Inc. LLC, who will perform construction services on the two canals. The project, known as the Expansion of Temporary Pump Stations at 17th Street and London Avenue Canals , is a design-build effort to increase overall capacity of those stations to pump internal storm drainage around the canal flood gates during major storms when the flood gates to Lake Pontchartrain are closed. The overall increase in capacity will provide for 7,600 cubic feet per second (cfs) on the 17th Street Canal and 5,000 cfs on the London Avenue Canal.
