Maintaining deep well submersibles

Maintenance of submersible pumps is complex due to the depth at which they are installed, which makes access difficult. Correct facility design to extend the time between failures and the monitoring of several parameters to determine the pumps’ performance during operation are therefore vital factors, as Miguel Ortiz from FACSA and Alejandro Palomo from Salinas y Perez report.

Load shifting aids energy saving: part 2

A South African initiative to encourage load shifting prompted an in-depth review of pumping processes at the Tugela paper mill’s water supply plant. After a general overview of the project, the first part of this two-handed case study1 focused on the plant’s high-lift pumping station. In this concluding part, Graeme Harding from the Magnet Engineering Division considers flow control, and assesses the transfer and low-lift pumping stages, and plant piping and instrumentation, before presenting the final solution.

Paris fountains get a new lease of life with KSB

When the fountains in the Trocadero Gardens near the Eiffel Tower in Paris needed extensive renovation work, it was not only a question of what equipment to choose but also how to get it through very restricted access routes. KSB's solution was to dismantle and then rebuild the machines powering the fountains in situ.

Almatec customised fix for abrasive PV slurry

The manufacturing of wafers for photovoltaic (PV) solar panels requires a precise process that puts production equipment to the test. Several of these processes involve highly abrasive slurries, which are a mixture of glycol and powdered silicon carbide. The challenge is to find equipment that can handle both wet and dry applications in a corrosive environment.

Grundfos dosing for off-gassing needs

When a US wastewater treatment plant in South Carolina saw lower flows than expected, due to a delayed housing project, the facility experienced repeated vapour lock resulting in higher operational and chemical costs. The manual dilution operation resulted in increased operational and chemical costs, so a solution was sought in Grundfos' digital dosing technology.

Calculating pipes and duty points with Vogel Software tools

Energy savings can be obtained in several ways, but before manufacturers turn to hydraulic optimisation of units or apply new electrical drives or powerful control systems, they should look at the dimensions of the pipelines and make sure they get the duty point specifications right. This can be done with the aid of web-based tools from Vogel Software.

Surge protection in tall buildings

As water companies reduce water pressure in the domestic mains to reduce leakages, tall buildings are becoming reliant on booster pumps to provide water at sufficient pressure to enable normal daily living. This has revealed a potential threat – hydraulic shock, says Gary Wheatley from Wilo (U.K.) Ltd.

Stormwater tank design – the Grundfos way

Increasingly, cities and low-lying areas are at risk of sewer overflow from extreme rainfall. Stormwater tanks can help reduce the impact of extreme climatic events by holding back excess stormwater and contaminants. This protects the environment and makes possible the intelligent management of stormwater flows, resulting in savings on infrastructure investments. Now Grundfos has developed a handbook informing engineers about tank design and optimisation.
