Frothing and breakdowns were regular occurrences for printer Portishead Press as their air-operated diaphragm pump and its seals could not cope with the caustic coating solution used by the printer. The company needed a pump that could move the coating fluid quickly, without introducing air, so they looked at a Watson-Marlow close coupled peristaltic pump to provide the answer.

A manufacturer of anti-icing products needed to improve efficiency. The delicate structure of these products required a very gentle pumping action with minimal sheer, while agitation and turbulence had to be kept to a minimum. The installation of progressive cavity pumps reduced maintenance and made production processes more efficient.

A Danish company was having trouble transferring water-based ink onto print rollers. A gentler solution was needed which would ensure the ink was bubble-free. The installation of five peristaltic pumps proved successful in overcoming space constraints and reducing the risk of downtime associated with cross contamination and spillage.

The thaw after heavy snowfall in Wiltshire, UK, resulted in localised flooding and road closures. The excess water needed to be cleared quickly. The Council provided snowploughs which could work in, and drive through the deep water, and mount a pump capable of shifting 5,500 litres of water a minute.

Pump consultant, Brian Nesbitt attempts to clarify the technical language used by pump engineers by explaining common terms used in conjunction with pump application and pump design.

In this short series of articles, Rafael Ocampo examines the basic theory concerning fatigue, the influence of stress raisers on fatigue failure, and the steps to take to reduce fatigue failures.

The director of design consultancy at PumpSupport, Hans Vogelesang, presents a five-part series covering energy savings in pumps.

In a bid to become as energy efficient as possible, Anglian Water asked Bravini to find an alternative to the old screw pump gearboxes at their trial site in Maldon. Planetary gearboxes were identified as the answer and since their installation, running costs have been reduced and pump efficiency has increased by 16%.

When installing AC drives with electric motors into potentially explosive atmospheres, company’s run the risk of accidents which can result in injuries and downtime. Since the introduction of ATEX directives into the European Union, the same procedure is safer and has simplified; requiring only the selection of equipment certified for the appropriate area.
