  • Controlling water ingress in a tunnel
A Swiss project to extend the rail infrastructure required tunnelling beneath a river. Pumps were needed which would cope with the possible danger of flooding during construction. A solution was found which removed residual water reliably and effectively and was able to be fitted with a tailor-made system in just three weeks.
  • Moving the waters for tunnel construction
The largest civil engineering project in Ireland entailed building a road tunnel under a roaring tidal river. The massive components had to be prepared in advance and floated into place. This involved moving thousands of gallons of water, so SPP Pumps were brought in to make the crossing possible.

The Marmaray project, linking the European and Asian sides of Istanbul will be the world’s deepest immersed tube tunnel. The industry’s drive to create ever deeper tunnels has placed increasing demands on dewatering and construction equipment. Tsurumi rose to the challenge with its ‘puddle sucker’ LSC series.

Ingersoll Rand’s fluid technology department has introduced a new line of portable air-operated de-watering and solids handling diaphragm pumps, specifically developed for mining, construction and sump operations.
  • Dewatering a construction site using submersible pumps
One of the things that often are crucial at a construction work site is the dewatering issue. Groundwater from surroundings as well as rain can flood the whole site if not dealt with properly. When digging below the water table, the amount of water entering the site from the surrounding can be quite large, but this depends on the environment. Ola Hällgren presents an introduction of the role of submersible pumps in controlling the water level.
  • The diesel or electric dilemma
Until now, the choice between electric-driven or diesel-driven pumps for dewatering applications has not been an even contest. However, rising fuel costs have forced many engineers to re-consider their choice. Here, Roland Berns of BBA Pumps BV argues that in spite of the initial higher purchase price, diesel-driven pumps will pay their costs back many times over in fuel savings.

A construction site in the US required a five-month a dewatering project. When the banks of the final cut proved unstable and the project ran into problems, Thompson Pumps had to work fast to install extra pumps and solidify the excavation floor – which ensured a successful outcome.

Portable pump for solids-handling

08 July 2011

Hidrostal UK have launched a new range of portable, solids-handling, diesel-driven pump sets under the brand name of SuperHawk.

These portable pump-sets are designed to appeal primarily to users in the construction, water management and water treatment sectors, but their ability to handle viscous and solids laden liquids would make them suitable for a wide variety of applications in industry and food processing, making them suited to emergency or interim pumping solutions, as they can be transported and installed to cope with a variety of pumping requirements.

The SuperHawk 100-4 model has been design to run at full load for seven days, 24 hours a day, on only one standard tank of fuel; useful should the pump have to be left unattended for long periods.
The transportabable diesel pump features Hidrostal’s centrifugal screw impeller and an automatic dry-priming system. SuperHawk pumps are currently available in 3 in, 4 in, 6 in and 8 in models, with additional models planned for later release.

SuperHawk's, own vacuum pump is at the heart of the self-priming system, and all SuperHawk pump-sets are available in a variety of configurations including manual or automatic controls and trailer or skid mounted. The pumps can be trucked, craned or towed, with individual units being stacked on top of one another for easy storage.
