Installing an efficient system for pumping wastewater

The pumping station at a European holiday park was old and in need of replacement. To transfer the site's wastewater and effluent effectively, the park decided to replace its current system with a package from pump specialist Mono NOV.

At the Hoburne Naish holiday park in Hampshire, England, the existing 30 year old pumping station used to transfer wastewater and effluent to the main sewerage system needed replacing. For Hoburne, as a matter of public health, it is vital that the pumping system works effectively.

Hoburne turned to pump specialist Mono® NOV and after consultation, Mono supplied and installed two Munchpump® packages at the holiday park. The total design and full mechanical and electrical installation were carried out by Mono's experienced projects team. The team kept one of the existing pumps working whilst the installation of the new Munchpump packages was being carried out, this ensured that holiday makers suffered no inconvenience during the replacement process.
 

The full package

The Munchpump package consists of two Compact C range progressing cavity pumps and two SB Munchers®, in a duty-standby arrangement, transferring the effluent at 10 m3/h to the main sewerage system. The Munchermacerates any solids within the flow to a small particle size, therefore protecting the pumps from any large solids, which could cause blockages.
 

The Munchersmake light work of this maceration process, as each shaft is fitted with a series of interleaving cutters that allow liquid to pass through, trapping the solids and macerating with their high torque cutting action. Low operating and cutter tip speeds dramatically reduce mechanical wear and also greatly reduces noise levels compared to many high speed macerators.

Combining a Mono progressing cavity pump with a Mono Muncherallows the use of small bore pipework, typically 50 mm, which is a more cost effective solution to the traditional 100 mm rising main sewer and offers the further advantage of eliminating the risks of solids settling and septicity. As the equipment is surface mounted and installed in a clean, dry environment, access for maintenance is more user friendly than submersible pumps, with no need to lift equipment out of dirty sumps and one-man accessibility.
 
Mono says Munchpumps can consume less than 50% of the energy of a comparable submersible pump and the SB Muncheris such a reliable sewage macerator, that a three-year warranty is offered.
 
The positive displacement action of the Compact C pumps allow the speed to be set independent of pressure, allowing slow speed operation of the unit. This contributes significantly towards low wear rates, reduced energy consumption, extended component life and greater reliability of the overall pump package.
 

Installation minus the problems

As a long established holiday park, Hoburne Naish has a reputation for providing the very highest standards in accommodation, facilities and service. And by replacing its old pumping station with Mono's Munchpumps the park wanted to continue to provide a pleasant and hospitable environment for its holiday makers.
