In January 2006, World Pumps published a feature on external gear pumps for metering sodium hypochlorite and other wastewater treatment chemicals. • Nuclear power: Less resistance to energy efficiency
There are many ways to increase the efficiency of pumps. Here, Lew Beck at Oconee Nuclear Station discusses two of them: firstly the use of ceramic type coatings applied to pump internals such as the impeller and casing, and secondly through the renewal of original fits and tolerances.
  • Smoothing the way to lower emissions
Engineers at a European power station's FGD plant wanted to reduce SO2 emissions at the same time as maintaining consistent site efficiency. Installing two large motors to drive a booster fan and an absorber recirculation pump helped them ensure that the station's reputation for environmental responsibility was upheld.

Part of a massive sewers project in Northern Ireland requires the installation of dry well submersible pumps below ground. As the integrity of these depends on the performance of the primary mechanical seal, the solution uses a conventional mixed flow volute pump fitted with a packed gland.

Westinghouse opens nuclear pump and motor maintenance and repair facility in Belgium

22 January 2010

Westinghouse Electric Co has officially opened its European Pump and Motor Maintenance and Repair Centre in Nivelles, Belgium, for nuclear energy customers in Europe.

The new €6 million Westinghouse state-of-the-art workshop has been designed to perform work on multiple pumps and motors in parallel. It has easy truck access, a large-capacity crane (63T), and is equipped with a large vertical lathe, a large horizontal lathe, and a dynamic balancing machine capable of handling the largest pump and motor components. The Westinghouse pump and motor facility has an annual repair and refurbishment capacity of more than 20 large motors and 10 pumps per year.

The workshop will start its activities with the execution of a contract signed with EDF to maintain the pumps and motors of the primary circuit of their nuclear power plants in France.

“Our growth here in Nivelles is reflective of both the scope of the global nuclear renaissance and our ongoing commitment to create success for our customers. We see an exciting and long-term future for our industry, our company and for this new maintenance and repair centre,” said Nick Liparulo, senior vice president, Westinghouse Nuclear Services.

Westinghouse is growing its pump and motor organization in Europe and has plans for an additional expansion of the current maintenance and storage facility in Nivelles due to be completed by 2011.
