Zi-Lift Limited of Aberdeen is looking to recruit a pump design engineer to work on an innovative solution to overcome loss of downhole pressure when working in oil & gas reservoirs.

Pump designers Zi-Lift is looking to strengthen its team by adding an experienced pump design engineer with excellent fundamentals and good pump development experience.

This pump design engineer, together with its existing engineers and external experts, would work on its three main projects covering linear and rotary pumps, low and high speed, ranging from 10 hp to 250 hp.

Zi-Left is looking for a creative, talented engineer with excellent team working and communications skills to join a team on some really exciting developments.

The ideal candidate should have:

- Good engineering degree in related subject.
- Good fundamental knowledge and experience with centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
- Three years pump development experience.

Zi-Lift was formed during the last 18 months and it presently has 14 engineers covering; mechanical, fluids, materials, rotor-dynamics, electronics, instrumentation & control and software and has also formed close co-operations with industry experts and universities.

Background

When an oil or gas reservoir has been in production for some time, it loses its downhole pressure and its ability to force fluids to the surface without assistance. At this time, various forms of artificial lift are introduced.

The majority of the wells in the world require, or will eventually require, pumping mechanisms of one kind or another to lift the downhole fluids to the surface. These take many forms: rod lift (nodding donkeys), progressive cavity pumps, gas lift, electric submersible pumps (ESPs), to name but a few.

There are over 100,000 ESPs working in wells around the world today. Each time one fails, it has to be replaced. The ESP market in 2008 was over US$3.5 billion and growing, on average over the last five years, at 17% per year. The overall artificial lift market in 2008 was US$6.6 billion.

Zi-Lift is developing innovative downhole pumps for the oil and gas production industry driven by Permanent Magnet Motors (PMM) and using the latest pumping technologies. They are being designed and manufactured with outside diameters of less than the production tubing (2 in to 5 in). They will be conveyed through the production tubing using wireline spoolers, making installation and replacement highly cost-efficient.

The pumps are novel in that they go into the oil wells for long durations which requires that they are of small diameter, 2 in, have high ambient temperatures 120°C and long lifetimes of around two years.

The company is presently about 18 months into a five year plus development program and plan many more recruits along the way.
