  • Control system win for pumping station
With eight skips' worth of ragging being removed from a Scottish water treatment works on a weekly basis, continual pump blockages, flooding of local businesses, pollution of the seafront and odours were not uncommon. However, a new pump control system has helped resolve this without the need for a single reactive maintenance call-out.
  • Streamlining mixing and digest processes
Converting organic waste material into re-usable energy is an important part of the UK government's overall strategy for achieving targets for zero food and packaging into landfill by 2015. In Wales, a company installing mixing systems for anaerobic digesters found ways to streamline the process and ensure future improvements could be added easily.
  • Reducing water in an activated sludge tank
A small wastewater treatment plant in Switzerland needed an economical solution to tackle the initial stages of the process. The company found the answer in space-saving FHP pumps, utilizing a total of five at the plant. Since installation, the pumps have run continuously and without fault, only requiring scheduled maintenance.

Bord na Mona Environmental Products reaches 600 installation milestone for odour control systems

12 May 2010

The recent installation of a series of odour control system solutions at sites in the USA, Europe and Asia has brought the company to the 600 benchmark.

Bord na Mona’s Monafil process uses a naturally occurring highly stable media, which can be installed to 3 m in height and has typical life-spans of 5-8 years. Monafil is particularly suited to the treatment of air from solid waste composting and MBT processes. The Monashell and Monafil technologies are designed to deliver significant, environmentally responsible benefits for wastewater pumping stations, wastewater treatment works, sludge handling and treatment processors, municipal solid waste and composting centres, as well as various industrial facilities. Monashell is also effective for treating a broad range of compounds and high and variable levels of H2S and Organic Sulfides at the lowest whole life cost. Monashell uses a smaller footprint than conventional biofilters and its offsite or onsite modular construction allows ease of installation.

Shane Keaney, president Bord na Mona, said: “Odour emitted from wastewater treatment processes is increasingly a concern as populations grow and housing encroaches upon once-remote treatment facilities. Odour is more than unpleasant. It derives from sulfurous compounds that can raise acidity and cause corrosion. Our Monashell Biofiltration System is a sustainable, low maintenance and low operating cost alternative to traditional carbon or chemical scrubbing. The reuse of waste shells as media maintains a neutral pH, allowing for highly effective biological treatment of odorous reduced sulfur compounds in wastewater and industrial airstreams without the use of chemicals or nutrient addition.”
