  • Separating waste with automation
A European waste facility required automation and control equipment to separate paper from commercial and industrial waste. A compact one-stop solution was chosen. Sourcing the technology from one company meant the installation of the various components was straightforward and enabled the control system to be replicated at two further facilities.
  • Control strategies bring cost benefits
The terms of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, coupled with rising energy costs, has led to a radical rethinking about how pumping efficiencies can be improved using control strategies. Pump control specialist Retroflo has responded with a ‘breakthrough' system-wide pump control technology, as company founder and operations director Andy Laundon explains.
  • External gear pump metering success with sodium hypochlorite
In January 2006, World Pumps published a feature on external gear pumps for metering sodium hypochlorite and other wastewater treatment chemicals. Here, a US wastewater treatment company found that an external gear pump was so successful that they have been used to meter sodium hypochlorite ever since.
  • Conference review: European Desalination Society Conference
In May 2009 the spa town of Baden Baden, Germany, played host to the European Desalination Society’s Conference and Exhibition on Desalination for the Environment - Clean Water and Energy. Discussions focussed on the problems that many countries face in providing water for their populations, industries and agriculture. Bryan Orchard reports.
  • Peristaltic answer to caustic problems
Positive displacement pumps are still the preferred choice for metering highly corrosive and caustic chemicals. However, when it comes to reducing life-cycle costs, Chuck Treutel, P. E, of the Watson-Marlow Pumps Group, argues that peristaltic pump technology has the advantage over diaphragm and progressive cavity types.

Developments in metering diaphragms

19 May 2010

Modern metering pumps are generally environmentally friendly and efficient. To ensure reliability and safety when handling hazardous media, hermetically-sealed equipment uses intelligent break-sensing and separating diaphragms, plus reliable failure recognition. A Bubb and B Freissler of ProMinent Dosiertechnik report.
