Landia supplies pasteuriser for Scottish island

Landia has been chosen to supply equipment to an integrated waste management facility in Stornoway, allowing it to process seven tonnes of salmon waste per shift.

Owned and operated by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES), the local authority for the Western Isles, the Creed Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) includes a combined heat and power plant (CHP) and a 960m3 anaerobic digester (AD) plant.

When it decided it wanted to also make use of fish waste on the Isle of Lewis, investment in a good quality pasteuriser was vital, ensuring that the plant met Animal By-Product (ABP) regulations, which require waste to be treated for one hour at 70º C.

Landia supplied an ensiling tank, effectively a buffer/pre-treatment tank and the pasteuriser. Landia was able to provide a 10m3 unit, which sits in front of the 8m3 pasteuriser. The ensiling tank is equipped with an 18.5kW stainless steel long shaft chopper pump, which recirculates and blends the salmon waste into a smooth purée, before being discharged into the pasteuriser, fitted with Landia’s side-entry propeller mixer and dry-installed chopper pump.  The process meets ABP (Animal By-Products) regulations and is now part of Creed’s anaerobic digestion process
