Thirteen volunteers helped clear debris on the site to provide a cleaner environment. The waste, which included everything from bottles and beer cans to sports equipment and wildlife, was collected and taken back to ITT WWW’s Wedeco office in Manchester for safe disposal.  The voluntary clean up is one of ITT WWW’s joint activities with the BCU during 2010, the second year of a five year sponsorship of the BCU. As well as many people using the river and canals for sports, the area is home to lots of wildlife which need protecting from dangerous items contaminating the river.

“It’s great to see businesses taking an active involvement in cleaning up this stretch of river. Not only does it make a difference for all that use the local environment, but it also makes the area a more welcoming place for those who visit it,” said Gareth Field, the BCU’s north senior development officer. ITT WWW is currently working with the organisation to clear up key stretches of river, by running a number of similar projects across the country.
