Viscotec’s technical centre has carried out dispensing tests for a customer’s new one-component heat-conducting paste, showing that its pumps are capable of precise dispensing onto a printed circuit board, despite the high viscosity and abrasion of the thermal paste.

The finished circuit boards are installed in various electronic components in manufacturing processes. The thermal paste helps to support thermal heat management and ensures optimum heat transfer to the outside.

Abrasive pastes cause increased wear, especially if the material is also highly viscous and many dispensing systems and technologies, such as piston pumps, cannot meet the high demands of service life and precision.

For the dispensing tests, a one-component 3RD8 dispenser with ceramic rotor was used and powered by a ViscoPro-C servo drive. The material was conveyed via a ViscoMT-C cartridge emptying system.

The dispensing tests showed that despite the high viscosity and abrasion of the thermal paste, the individual lines and dots were dispensed with high levels of precision. The speeds of the dispenser and robot combined well and there was no dripping of the material.
