Millions of deaths are being caused every year in poorer countries due to a lack of clean drinking water. Meanwhile, in more affluent areas, demand for water is increasing. In both cases there is an urgent need for more potable water and the development of new means to produce it.
Membrane desalination is the most promising of the new approaches but the technology raises energy efficiency as well as environmental and sustainability issues which will be covered in the conference.
