Biostat A is a compact bioreactor/fermenter designed specifically as an entry-level model for fermentation and cell culture as well as for educational purposes. The system's control tower features an array of measurement and control functions like easy-load peristaltic pumps, an aeration module and accessible probe ports and supply connections.

Automatic control

The Biostat A new aeration system provides automatic control of all gas lines with continuous gas flows. According to the manufacture, this means no further manual adjustment of rotameters is necessary and any problem with pulsed aeration is a non-issue.The system has been designed to be easy to operate: the user connects the aeration hoses, configure the aeration profile and enter the DO setpoint. Using the Biostat A for cell culture applications, aeration with four gases (air, O2, CO2 and N2) is possible for controlling pH and DO. The microbial version allows aeration with two gases (air and O2).

The new bioreactor is equipped with digital pH and DO probes. These help users recognize whether they can confidently use a probe for the next cultivation process. The moisture-resistant plug connection assures secure data transmission.

Each Biostat A for microbial fermentations is equipped with a chiller to remove heat from the device. This reduces cooling water consumption and the laboratory does not need to be equipped with a cooling water system. The user needs only to operate the system is electricity and a gas supply.

Intuitive user interface

The intuitive user interface makes the new bioreactor suitable for beginners because it prevents operating errors and reduces training time to a minimum, says Sartorius. Optional operation with a tablet or smartphone is part of the Advanced package and allows you to monitor and control the system, whether you're on the go, in the lab, at the office or at home.

Biostat A is available with various single-walled borosilicate glass culture vessels with maximum working volumes of 1, 2 or 5 l. In addition to the UniVessel made of glass, the UniVessel SU disposable bioreactor can also be operated with the same control tower and offers a maximum working volume of 2 l.
