The TWL safety pump from SPX

The ClydeUnion Pumps Turbine Water Lubricated (TWL) pump is designed to improve safety and reliability to both pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactors.

It addresses many of the safety concerns raised by reviews and reports following the Fukushima disaster with favorable reaction from the nuclear industry.

The TWL pump is driven by a steam turbine that extends the operation of auxiliary feed water or reactor core isolation cooling pump systems during a station blackout.

The aim is to continue pumping the supply of water for core cooling and decay heat removal, allowing a nuclear plant to be better equipped to cope with events such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes.

It can start and operate while fully submerged and has been designed and tested to withstand seismic events.
