He will be succeeded as senior independent director by Richard (Rick) Menell, who has been a non-executive director of Weir since 2009.

Weir Group chairman Charles Berry said: “Lord Robertson has been a wise source of counsel to his fellow board members for almost a decade. His contribution to the success of the group during that time has been enormous and on behalf of the board I would like to thank him for his dedication and service.”

Meanwhile Professor Sir Jim McDonald, principal and vice chancellor of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, will become a non-executive director of Weir from 1 January 2015.

“Sir Jim is one of the UK’s most respected engineers and academic leaders. His expertise in power markets and the development of world-class research and development programmes mean that I am certain he will make a very significant contribution to the board and to the future success of the Group,” added Berry.
