The dewatering and sewage pump manufacturer is responding to changes in global supply chains that have occurred since the Covid-19 pandemic, characterised by fluctuations in parts availability and costs. The company is also looking to have greater control over its manufacturing process and quality.
Tsurumi already manufactures around 110,000 motors per year. The new plant’s focus will be on drives for the GPN series, a robust sand pump with a flow rate of up to 9000 l/min.
For this and other series, Tsurumi is already producing cast parts that were previously purchased. This is partly out of necessity as the number of foundries in Japan has declined by about 70% in the last 20 years. On the other hand, Tsurumi says it is also entering the technological frontier: 3D printers layer the moulds from many layers of sand, which increases precision compared to the conventional process.
The new plant, which will be Tsurumi’s seventh manufacturing facility, is scheduled to go into operation in autumn 2024.
